About the show

Held at the end of each season, the show is the club's largest gathering of the year.

İstanbul Yorkshire Canary Club was founded in 2010 to bring together the people who breed and love the Yorkshire canary. The club's largest undertaking each year is the show held at the end of the season: members bring the birds they have raised in their own lofts into a single hall, the birds are assessed by independent judges, and the placings are announced the same day.

The first show was held in 2018. The 2020 event was cancelled on health grounds; apart from that year the show has run every season without a break. Birds are eligible if they wear a ring showing they were bred in the year of the show. They are divided into classes by colour group, feather type and sex, and each class is assigned a judge experienced in that area.

Assessment follows the criteria set out in the competition rules. Placings are awarded within each class, and the best birds in the hall are chosen separately at the close of the day. Registration, judging and the announcement of results are all completed within the same day.

The purpose of the show is not to produce a ranking but to raise the standard of breeding. Members see one another's birds, hear the judges' reasoning, and plan the next season's pairings on what they have learned. Every result from past years is archived on this site, so members can follow their own placings season by season.

For entry requirements, fees and the order of the show day see the Competition Rules; for the classes birds compete in see Competition Categories; for previous years see Competition Results.

Who decides my bird's class?

Your own declaration is taken into account at registration, but the final decision rests with the desk officials. A last check is made before judging begins; any bird moved to another class is announced on the board at the hall entrance, so it is worth checking it.

How long does the show last?

Three days: birds are staged on the first day, judged on the second after staging closes, and the third day is the award ceremony followed by the return of the birds. The dates are announced separately each year.

Who provides the show cage?

Each exhibitor provides their own cage; the club also rents cages, with requests and stock handled on this site. A small white show drinker and seed are compulsory. A plain white paper liner may be used, but nothing that could serve as a mark.

How are places and points decided?

Seven places are awarded in each class; a Best Seven is then chosen from all birds, together with Best in Show and the best opposite sex. Class points run from 7 down to 1, and birds in the Best Seven earn additional points. The breeder ranking adds up the points of every show held to date.

Can I collect my bird before the ceremony?

No. No bird is handed back before the award ceremony ends; birds are returned by the officials in cage-number order, starting with the lowest number.
